ERIS to start democracy support projects in North Africa

August 2012

ERIS is about to start projects In Egypt, Algeria and Morocco funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)'s Arab Partnership Fund.  In Egypt, we will be training women candidates prior to the local council elections.  In Algeria we will be working with the independent TV station Echorouk to train its staff and to organise televised political debates, and in Morocco we will be organising workshops for Moroccan journalists on the role of the media in a democratic society.

Meanwhile, our project in Libya is now drawing to an end after a successful citizen observation of the recent general elections.  Our project trained citizen election observers from two organisations – one a women’s group, the other a group of ex-combatants.  We hope to continue to work in Libya and are currently discussing with possible funders the form our activities may take.  We are also considering what we might do in Yemen and Jordan.

Contact Eiman Elnaiem, our Middle East and North Africa programme officer, for more information about these projects.
