Political Finance Monitoring training in Zimbabwe

October 2009

In May 2010 ERIS and its local partner the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) trained 300 of ZESN's Long Term Observers (LTO) to use a pilot political finance monitoring methodology, which they will now roll out in their local areas. The training is part of its project for Electoral Process Training for Civil Society in Zimbabwe supported by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).

The monitoring methodology and the accompanying checklists were produced through a series of trainings and strategic planning workshops coordinated by ERIS/ZESN.

We also benefited from the participation of political finance expert Magnus Ohman of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), as well as Kennedy Masime of the Kenyan Coalition for Accountable Political Finance (CAPF) and Victor Shale of the Electoral Institute of Southern Africa (EISA).

Once the methodology has been piloted, further training of up to 300 observers will be carried out.
