ERIS observer Gavin Aarvold was the subject of a recent Al Jazeera documentary as part of their Power and People series during the Ukraine observation mission.
Keith BestChairmanKeith Best TD, MA, MinstF, FRSA, Cert in Public Management Services has been Chief Executive of IAS since 1993. A barrister and former Member of Parliament he was named in the Society Guardian on 10 September 2003 as one of the 100 most influential people in public services in the UK. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration after serving in airborne and commando forces leaving with the rank of major. He was formerly Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Wales and Director of Prisoners Abroad (national charity). He is currently Chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Federalist Movement/Institute for Global Policy that seeks improved international structures on federalist principles with observer status at the UN and Chairman of the Association of Registered Immigration Advisers. He was the Chairman of the Electronic Immigration Network [national charity] for ten years (still a Trustee); formerly Chairman of the Electoral Reform Society (and still on the Council). He is a Freeman of the City of London. He is the author of several books and articles and has delivered keynote speeches both in the UK and abroad. Terence HumphreysChief ExecutiveTerence Humphreys has worked as teacher, theatre manager and British Council officer and has 26 years overseas experience in Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Zambia, Cameroon and Ghana. As British Council Director in Ghana and Cameroon he worked on education, governance, leadership and arts projects with DFID, EU, USIS, NORAD, CIDA, SIDA, the Commonwealth, UN and the World Bank, with INGOs CARE and VSO and with FCO and other diplomatic missions. Having worked with ERIS in Cameroon and Ghana on the Children's Election Project, he has been Chief Executive of ERIS since 2004, a period which has seen large ERIS projects, particularly in Liberia and Ethiopia and many observer missions, most notably to Ukraine. | |
Dame Audrey Glover DBE CMGDirectorDame Audrey Glover is a human rights lawyer and has worked as a legal adviser in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as well as advising departments on human rights issues. She has also worked as the agent before the European Commission and Court of Human Rights. Dame Audrey was seconded by the FCO as Director of ODIHR from 1994 to 1997. She then headed the UK Delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission from 1998 to 2003. More recently, Dame Audrey has headed the OSCE/ODIHR EOMs to Belarus (2004), Kazakhstan (2005), the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (2006) and Ukraine (2007). She has worked in Baghdad as a human rights adviser to the Coalition Provisional Authority and the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights in 2004, 2005 and 2006. | |
Kaye Oliver, CMG, OBEDirectorMiss Oliver was a member of HM Diplomatic Service until 2002. She spent sixteen years in Africa, including as Ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi and as High Commissioner to Lesotho. Since 2002 she has worked as an independent consultant and has evaluated a number of peace building programmes in Africa on behalf of the Department for International Development (DFID). She has observed elections for the Commonwealth in Kenya and Nigeria and for ERIS in Rwanda, Burundi and Zambia. Miss Oliver is a member of the Royal African Society, The Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA); the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Great Lakes Region and Genocide Prevention (APPG). | |

David MathiesonDirectorDavid Mathieson was educated as an engineer and information systems technologist, specializing in administrative systems, business processes, planning, and operations.He has worked as a consultant and IT Director with both commercial and public sector clients, in the UK, USA and EU countries. He is a former party local chairman, elected District Councillor and was the founding treasurer of the UK Parliamentary Information Technology Committee. Since 1998 he has been a Director of ERIS, the International Services Division of the Electoral Reform Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and has run several election and voter registration projects in Africa. Within ERIS he is responsible for finance, administration, IT and project management.He was born in 1947, in Liverpool. | |
Hannah RobertsConsultantHannah Roberts, Project Director: since February 2007 Hannah has been the Director of NEEDS. Before this she had worked extensively for NEEDS, in election observation and also in technical assistance and election administration. Hannah has conducted many NEEDS training seminars as well as other trainings with domestic observer groups and with political parties. She has participated in a variety of Core Team and field roles on observation missions with the European Union, OSCE/ODIHR, and with the Council of Europe. This has included work in the US, Africa, Asia and Europe. In addition to this she has undertaken a variety of technical assistance tasks, including most recently on restructuring and strategic planning for the National Elections Board of Ethiopia. She was the Deputy Head of Country for the 2005 Iraqi Out-of -Country Voting in Syria. She has also written polling manuals, voter education materials and observation resources. | ![]() |
Anders ErikssonConsultantAnders Eriksson, Training Co-ordinator: Anders has been involved with election observation since 1989 and has worked on some 35 missions in total, as Head of Misison, Election Analyst and Statistical Analyst. For OSCE and UN Anders has carried out technical assistance in several countries. Anders is an election official in Sweden and was the Co-ordinator of the earlier EU Election Observation Project, which also provided training for EU observers. Anders was also the Editor of the EU Election Observation Handbook and Benchmark for Electoral Standards |
