ERIS strengthens SADC election management bodies' capacity to manage crises

March 2014

Since August 2013, ERIS has been working in partnership with the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC Countries (ECF-SADC) to strengthen the capacity of election management bodies to prevent and deal with election-related crises.

The project began with a scoping study that looked at the recent experiences of several African election management bodies. This was followed by a peer-learning workshop in November 2013 in Gaborone, Botswana, where senior election managers from across the SADC region met to discuss best practices and share their experiences.

In late February 2014, the insights that arose from the scoping study and peer-learning workshop formed the basis for a training of trainers’ course for election managers.  Participants from across the SADC region came to Gaborone for a training workshop that included units on triggers of election crises, best practices and facilitation skills. This allowed them, in turn, to provide training to their respective commissions.

A related training video and online portal with training materials and other resources will soon be available.
