On May 6 2012, Serbians will elect 250 members to their National Assembly (Narodna skupstina) through a closed-list proportional representation system to serve four-year terms.
The OSCE/ODIHR will be sending a Limited Election Observation Mission and the mission has already started. The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has selected ERIS to recruit and manage the deployment of UK observers for the OSCE/ODIHR LEOM to Serbia. We are sending one UK long-term observer (LTO) (of a total of 10 for the mission), who will be deployed from 8 April to 10 May.
The OSCE/ODIHR's Needs Assessment report of February 2012 was generally very positive about the situation in Serbia and expressed a high level of trust in the impartiality and professionalism of the electoral commission. Since 2008 a number of amendments have been made to key electoral laws. These should be viewed positively in theory, but cannot be fully judged until they are practically implemented.
