ERIS ran its Long Term Observer (LTO) training course from 14-16 September 2011, facilitated by trainers Hannah Roberts and Carlo Accame. Our course takes a comprehensive look at the challenges of long-term election observation, combining an examination of election observation methodology with practical, ‘real-life’ experiences.
The 16 participants were drawn from the UK, Austria, France, Spain, Ireland and Canada. Most have prior STO experience or other election-related experience. The training covered a broad range of themes and skill sets and included practical exercises, group work, role play sessions and a mission simulation designed to test not only factual knowledge but also aptitude, flexibility and interaction with other participants.
We were delighted to be joined for various sessions by presenters from the EU, OSCE/ODIHR and the FCO, as well as our ERIS Chair Keith Best and Board Member Dame Audrey Glover, herself an experienced observer with the OSCE/ODIHR.
The next ERIS LTO training course is scheduled for March/April 2012. To receive the announcement about this and other election observation opportunities, sign up to our Election Observation mailing list.
