Selection Criteria

ERIS adheres to strict selection criteria in order to ensure a high professional standard of UK observers. All candidates for participation in election observation missions should fulfill the following requirements:

  • Previous experience (national and/or international) of election monitoring and/or other relevant experience and/or training
  • Good knowledge of the mission's working languages
  • Strong interpersonal skills including balanced judgement, ability to work in teams and to cope with difficult situations, respect for local attitudes, good communication, and readiness to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to maintain professional independence and strict impartiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to democracy and human rights
  • Academic or professional background in democracy and human rights, international work or military background.

Please note that for election observer missions ERIS only recruits UK citizens. Non-UK citizens are advised to contact their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

How to apply

ERIS recruits for specific OSCE/ODIHR missions on a case-by-case basis. Once each announcement is circulated, applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) to eom@eris.org.uk. Numbers are limited and an expression of interest does not guarantee a place on the UK team.

In their EoIs, applicants must:

1) Certify their availability for the entire deployment period;

2) Certify that they are medically fit to endure physically strenuous situations;

3) Provide a single paragraph motivation statement detailing their specific experience relevant to the mission they are applying for. Please bear in mind the selection criteria in preparing this statement.

The EoI must be accompanied by an up-to-date CV in the ERIS CV Pro Forma) and an Equal Opportunities Form (EOF). A new EOF is needed for each application.

ERIS will select observers only from those who provide a full EoI. Unfortunately due to the volume of applications it is not possible to contact unsuccessful candidates individually. APPLICATIONS MADE OVER THE PHONE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

N.B.: Contracts to supply the UK team for OSCE/OHDIR EOMs are awarded on a case-by-case basis, and ERIS does not automatically recruit for all EOMs.
