Want to know more about being an volunteer election observer for the UK?

Selection Criteria

Please note that ERIS adheres to strict selection criteria in order to ensure a high professional standard of UK observers.

All candidates for participation in electoral observation missions should ideally fulfill the following minimum standards:

  • Previous experience of election monitoring and/or other relevant experience or know-how and specific training, national and/or international
  • Good experience of the mission's working languages
  • Interpersonal skills (e.g. capacity of balanced judgement, ability to work in teams, ability to cope with difficult situations, respect for local attitudes, good communication skills, readiness to work in a multi-cultural environment)
  • Ability to maintain professional independence and strict impartiality in the conduct of duties in the host country
  • Demonstrated commitment to democracy and human rights
  • Academic or Professional background related to democracy and human rights, international work or previous military background.

Please note that ERIS only recruits UK citizens. Non-UK citizens are advised to contact their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

How to apply

Please note that contracts for OSCE/OHDIR Election Observation Missions are awarded on a case by case basis, and ERIS does not automatically cover the recruitment for all EOMs.

The required number of observers on a mission is strictly limited, and an expression of interest does not guarantee a place on the UK team.

Preference is given to those with prior observation experience, relevant professional background and language skills, and relevant country experience.

ERIS recruits for specific missions on a case by case basis.

In order to apply for specific missions, applicants must submit a full Expression of Interest to eom@eris.org.uk .

The EoI must contain:

1) certify their availability for the entire deployment period;

2) certify that they are medically fit to endure physically strenuous situations;

3) provide a single paragraph motivation statement detailing their specific experience relevant to the mission they are applying for;

The expression of interest must include a completed, up to date, CV, (preferably in the ERIS CV Pro Forma) and an Equal Opportunities Form. A new Equal Opportunites form should be completed for each new application.

ERIS will select the required number of observers only from those who provide a full expression of interest.

APPLICATIONS MADE OVER THE PHONE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED
