Our Role
Once the European Commission has received formal invitation from the electoral authority of the particular state to be observed, Member States are asked to submit a certain number of LTOs and STOs, respecting a set deadline and according to pre-determined criteria.
Acting on behalf of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, ERIS will shortlist the required number of UK observers registered on the roster according to criteria set by the EC, and will electronically indicate to the EC those proposed for the mission. At this point the active role of ERIS ends, and the Commission will begin a second screening process. Final selections are made from candidates short-listed by ERIS.
ERIS does not make the final selection of active observers who will participate in the missions. This decision is taken by the Commission.
Observers will be contracted by the Commission, which will assume full responsibility for payment, insurance and other contractual matters.
Missions will be announced in the EU-EOM section of the ERIS website, and candidates will be invited to send expressions of interest to ERIS.
All persons interested in being considered as an STO or LTO must be registered on the
EuropeAid roster.
Selection of candidates for participation on EU electoral observation missions is made according to a set of common criteria in order to ensure a high professional standard of EU observers. Once the final selections have been made, those selected will be informed and contacted by the Service Provider contracted to conduct the EU Election Observation Mission. In most cases a briefing will be arranged prior to deployment, and will be held at either the FCO or the ERIS office.
